Back in 1961, with swinging London and The Beatles about to break upon the world, little had changed in rural Ireland, where two small boys were playing cowboys and Indians. Tom, the more adventurous of the two scrambled onto the roof of a shed; "Bang! You're dead!" shouted his friend and Tom fell to the ground, hitting his head in the process. Neither could have guessed that Tom's adventurous spirit and his determination to succeed in business would soon lead this local shopkeeper's son onto the boards of international companies, to travel the world and to receive a telephone number salary. Nor that at the very peak of his success the impact of that apparently insignificant childhood accident would suddenly become manifest.
Tom's path to success on both sides of the Atlantic was rapid and spectacular, and during the 1980s he was amongst the most brilliant; a Senior Partner in a London-based investment bank. But then Tom was told that he was going blind as a result of his childhood accident. Refusing to admit it to himself and trying to hide it from his colleagues Tom finally lost his job and his money, falling eventually into severe depression and alcoholism.
However, Tom's will to succeed again conquered and he returned to University, discovered aspects of life, such as music and literature, for which he had previously not had time and reinvented himself with a new identity. Finally he was able to find a full and active role applying the skills learnt in his financial career to the benefit of others.

As an account of how a seemingly innocuous childhood injury sent Pey into sudden blindness in middle age, this book is articulate and straightforward. As a story, though, it's not as personal as it could have been. Pey begins with an evocative childhood portrait, detailing his small hometown in Ireland's Midlands, amid the usual specter of Protestant-Catholic division, creeping poverty and the lure of alcohol. A critical moment comes during a game of cowboys and Indians in 1960, when Pey takes an imaginary bullet in the chest from his friend, who shouts, "Bang! You're dead." Pey falls off the roof of a shed and hits a sycamore, banging his nose. The book then settles into a lull as he grows up and ascends through the business world. A divorce and many jobs later, he's a high-flying partner in a London financial firm by 1991. He starts worrying about his sight after nearly killing a pedestrian while driving, and visits a doctor, who tells him he's going to lose his vision very soon, thanks to that fateful fall years ago. The downhill slide is terrifyingly fast, and Pey hides in denial and drink, concealing his problem from employers who constantly suspect him of being drunk because of the clumsiness brought about by his worsening sight. Soon unemployed and disabled, Pey sinks into despair he learns that more than 75% of visually impaired people are unemployed and how he eventually finds a fulfilling job is upbeat, but lacks detail. While the memoir is an inconsistent mixture of inspirational, medical and business tales, it does bring home to the average reader just how terrifying such an ordeal would be.

The time is the early 1960s, London is swinging, Beatniks are on the streets and The Beatles are in the charts, but in rural Ireland little has changed. Two small boys, Tom and Jimmy are playing cowboys. 'Bang! You're dead' says Jimmy and, though neither of them could realize it then, a time would come when Tom wished he had died there.
The 1980s were a time of conspicuous consumption; champagne flowed, cars were fast and bright young men could make a lot of money. Tom was amongst the brightest-his yearning for new challenges had led him from rural Ireland to New York and London and to become a senior partner in an investment bank. Yet as the 1980s moved into the 1990s Tom found himself in a hospital in Baltimore learning that he was shortly to become blind as a result of that childhood game.
Stricken by depression and disbelief Tom struggled to come to terms with the one-in-a million accident that would rob him of everything that he had fought to achieve. Yet, drawing on his inner resources Tom was eventually able to build a new life for himself-a life in which he discovered the true satisfaction and peace of mind that he had so ardently pursued through other routes.
